About Kimberley Durrance

Professional Trainer
Trainer and Consultant in Neurodivergence, Mental Health, and Well-being

Background
Hello, I'm Kimberley, a dedicated trainer and consultant with a passion for helping individuals and communities thrive. My journey into this field began with my personal experience as someone with multiple neurodivergences, diagnosed from childhood and continuing into adulthood. These experiences fuelled my desire to support others facing similar challenges.

Determined to make a difference, I returned to education to work with children, parents, and teachers, developing strategies to help children who struggle to achieve their potential. Over time, my focus expanded to include mental health, inspired by my own struggles and the tragic loss of a close family member to suicide. This motivated me to become a Mental Health First Aid instructor in 2015, and I have been delivering this essential training ever since. I have also gone on to create my own training courses and deliver various accredited courses, including dementia awareness, neurodivergence, and more.

Experience
With over a decade of experience in neurodivergence and mental health training, I have worked with a wide range of audiences, from school staff to community members. My work at Queens Park Primary School, where I encouraged teachers to prioritise well-being, led to significant positive changes not only at the school but also in the broader community. The mental health initiatives we implemented created a ripple effect, improving children's mental health and development across multiple schools.

Since 2014, I've been a pioneer in Mental Health First Aid training in London, collaborating with commissioners to bring this vital education to underserved communities. Thousands have benefitted from these programmes, gaining tools and knowledge to support mental health in their personal and professional lives.

I believe in the power of understanding personal learning styles and adapting strategies accordingly. My sessions often start with a deep dive into the individual's goals, challenges, and preferences, ensuring that the strategies we develop together are effective and empowering.

Impact
My work has had a transformative impact on individuals and communities. Clients often express that a few sessions with me have provided insights and tools that might have taken years to discover on their own. My commitment to creating supportive learning environments ensures that everyone can challenge themselves and grow in a respectful and inclusive space.

Personal Values
I am driven by the belief that we should actively create the change we want to see in the world. Kindness, collaboration, and being good role models for future generations are at the heart of my work. An extremely interesting and enlightening course. Kimberly was a great instructor, taking the time to explain and answer questions with sensitivity. She was able to handle some very 'heavy ' subjects delicately, whilst simultaneously giving the class confidence should they encounter any of the given situations. It is a great feeling to know that not only am I now able to support someone else (stranger, friend or family) should I need to, I can also use the tools and skills learnt for my own personal wellbeing. It would be great if there were further opportunity to do refresher courses etc, to keep up-to-date with current events in this field. Lastly as someone who has line management responsibility, I am more confident that I can proactively support my team. Great course and instructor - Thank You!

I am so pleased that I get the chance to do this course, now I will be more aware and concern about anyone who may be experience mental health issues by understand and supporting them better.
I found it very good to be able to understand, above all, how to help someone who may need my help. It's a very large subject but having the basics makes it easier to help someone who might need it and it will help me personally as well. Thank you very much for the opportunity.

I found the course hugely beneficial and informative and feel better prepared to assist those struggling with their mental health. The course was delivered brilliantly by Kimberley, who couldn't have been a better instructor.

A very effective and informative course. Presented empathetically and professionally by our instructor Kimberly Durrance.Thank you.
Course exceeded my expectations and Kimberley was a brilliant trainer. So knowledgeable but also a very compassionate and empathetic person and the course was handled very sensitively and professionally. I have already recommended this course to a few other organisations

Kimberley was amazing, she gave life to the course, was very inclusive and supportive - a great course
The course was very interesting , it will help me to support my mental health and to be able to support others with great confidence. So thank you very much

The MHFA course was excellently delivered. The instructor kept us engaged all throughout the course and delivered the information in a way that we could all understand. The course I attended was delivered face to face and I believe this gave it an additional advantage. The role playing in specify allowed to "put into practice" the information discussed and it was a fantastic way to consolidate the knowledge. I've returned to work today and provided the same feedback to my team. They will be sending more colleagues to attend the MHFA course in the future.

Elias: One thing that I thought was valuable is being kind and compassionate when dealing with any situation and ensuring I’m well so that I can support others. My understanding of mental health and well-being has changed a lot since completing the course. I understand more conditions and how they affect individuals. I also feel confident to approach people about their issues. I think this is very good at removing negative stigma.

Neil: A skill I learnt was how to approach and talk to people who seem to have mental health problems. I now understand more about the range of mental health problems and how they can be treated. It was enlightening to learn about depression and psychosis.

Steven: I learned how to help in a structured way. The instructor was excellent, professional, and communicative. I would definitely recommend this course as it is much needed.

Tyrell: Listening is a skill that I gained a lot of insight into. I learnt that just by listening to someone it can go a very long way. Through the course, I can now see and identify when people might not be okay or seeking help and the signs and symptoms they might display when they might not be asking for help. Working in a place centre, I will use this course as a way to check up on children and make sure I understand them and can be there for them when they look like they need someone to lean on. I would recommend this course to others, as it offers beautiful insight into mental health and how to tackle it.

Lenny: The most valuable skill I learnt really was gaining confidence and also the ability to be able to ask questions about suicide. I feel that I’ve learnt a lot on this course about how to approach people to talk about their struggles. My understanding about diagnosis and symptoms has increased massively. Thoroughly enjoyed learning about eating disorders as it showed how impactful they can be and it’s not always for personal gain but actually through pressure. I think my confidence has grown in the way that I’ll be able to listen and understand mental health problems a lot better so that I can offer support and guidance. Resonated with the sections focused on anxiety and suicide attempts as it helped me to be able to spot future signs. I would recommend opening your eyes to serious mental health and how we can all play a role in getting rid of the bad stigma. Kimberley is brilliant and passionate. Her insights are very helpful and you can see she truly cares about such an important cause.

Jawad: The most valuable skill on this course was learning about the ALGEE acronym. It was really insightful and something I plan to use in my day-to-day life. Found learning about anxiety particularly helpful and I feel I’ve learnt a lot more about suicide and how to support people who are having a bad time. I felt the suicide video was very powerful. I would recommend this to others because it teaches you about how to approach people who are going through a lot.

Through the course, I’ve gained a much better understanding about mental health. I found it really helpful when I learnt how many different types of mental health issues there are. This course is perfect; it touches on all topics well. I would recommend this course to other people as they would take mental health more seriously and learn how to deal with and support people when they’re suffering.

Kevin: The most valuable thing that I learnt was to never be judgemental. I learnt to be more understanding of people and I learned that everyone has mental health problems, but mental ill health is when it’s got worse. I would recommend this course.

This course was really helpful at giving the definitions, warning signs, and crisis steps for common illnesses. It was good to explore boundaries through role-play and I now feel better able to recognise warning signs and how to start conversations. Moving forward, I want to make colleagues aware that I can be here for support and I’m planning to use it with my family. Kimberley was amazing and her openness and honesty about her own experiences were so useful. Everyone should do this course.

Ahmed
The most valuable skill I learnt was how to signpost people and how to compassionately support people in crisis. I now have a great understanding and confidence in helping people. I found it really helpful on this course to explore the common mental health issues and have the knowledge, awareness, and skills to help people. I learnt about others but also have a better understanding of myself. The instructor was excellent in her delivery and her connections on a human level. I would recommend this to others as it’s important and needed.

I found the course very informative, beneficial and learnt a lot about the different type of mental health illness. It made me more aware and have a better understanding of mental health so that I'll be able to recognise and deal with it not just for myself but also in the people around me. I found the activities, case studies and videos very effective as it gave me a glimpse of what a person going through mental health must be feeling or dealing with. It's a wonderful course.
I found this course incredibly useful in understanding mental health issues and how to approach/deal with them and how to support people. I thought the pace of the course was perfect and heavy subjects were dealt with sensitively and we had enough breaks to process without becoming overwhelmed

This was such a great course, and I am very happy to have done it. It certainly opened my eyes to a lot of things i either thought i knew or never knew, and i think a course like this should be standard learning in schools and part of the actual first aid course, even if it is a small condensed part of the course.

The instructor was great at listening and encouraging everyone to speak openly. I would recommend this course to everyone.

Alexander: I was astonished to be included in such a course. Due to the nature of my previous career, dealing with individuals you know, or indeed have never met, I do not haveany qualms in facing potentially tricky situations. The course has given me a new mindset in dealing with Mental Health. It has put me at ease, so I feel I can put others at ease. This course is a building block for me, togain more confidence and practical skills with individuals in trauma, or crisis.I would like extend a particular 'Thanks' to the Instructor, Kimberley. She managed to create a relaxed atmosphere at the venue. This enabled all participants tocontribute personal experiences towards the course material. It was a course with real experiences and enlightening.I shall try and put my knowledge into a frame of ' best practice'.
